In IEEE 802.16 networks, bandwidth request–grant schemes are employed for reducing data collision and supporting various QoS requirements. In this paper, we investigate the impact of such schemes on BestEffort (BE) traffic. We examine three candidate schemes. In the first scheme, each Subscribe Station (SS) attempts to request bandwidth in every frame to reduce delay. In the second scheme, the number of bandwidth request is limited to avoid collisions in bandwidth request. In the third scheme, a base station allocates bandwidth to each SS based on the measured sending rate without explicit bandwidth request. We quantitatively analyze the performance of these schemes in terms of the collision rate and buffer length. We also present a simulation study to validate our analysis and to observe the impact of these schemes on BE traffic. This paper shows that IEEE 802.16 networks can be effectively managed through appropriate bandwidth request schemes. It is also shown that bandwidth allocation without request can be an alternative for increasing utilization. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Study of Bandwidth-Perception Management Mechanisms in IEEE 802.16 Networks

Bandwidth request-grant mechanisms are used in 802.16 networks to manage the uplink bandwidth needs of subscriber stations (SSs). Requests may be sent by SSs to the base station (BS) by means of several mechanisms defined in the standard. Based on the incoming requests, the BS (which handles most of the bandwidth scheduling in the system) schedules the transmission of uplink traffic, by assigni...

The Effectiveness of Adaptive Capacity Allocation on QoE of Audio-Video IP Transmission over the IEEE 802.16 BE Service

SUMMARY This paper deals with two types of capacity allocation schemes, i.e., static and adaptive, for uplink and downlink burst durations in the IEEE 802.16 BE (Best Effort) service. We study QoE (Quality of Experience) enhancement of audio-video IP transmission over the uplink channel with the two capacity allocation schemes. We introduce a pig-gyback request mechanism for uplink bandwidth re...

Call Admission Control and Scheduling Schemes with QoS Support for Real-time Video Applications in IEEE 802.16 Networks

IEEE 802.16 networks are going to provide broadband wireless access with quality of service (QoS) guarantee. In all of services, real-time video traffic plays an impeditive role because of its varying bit-rate and stringent delay constraint. To the best of our knowledge, no call admission control (CAC) and scheduling schemes cover throughput expectation, delay constraint and fairness requiremen...

Performance evaluation of the MAC protocol in IEEE 802.16 systems with data and VoiP traffic scheduling

In the last few years, the metropolitan area networks (MAN) have increased their popularity and attracted the interest of the most important research groups all over the world. Among several standards, IEEE 802.16 has taken a relevant role providing high data rate in a big covering range with low implementation costs and multi-traffic communications. The IEEE 802.16 networks can have a pre-defi...

Link adaptation thresholds for the IEEE 802.16 base station

The IEEE 802.16 technology defines a number of modulation and coding schemes that the base station can use to achieve the best tradeoff between the spectrum efficiency and the resulting application level throughput. However, the 802.16 specification does not define any particular link level adaptation algorithm, neither does it specify the SNR thresholds for switching between the modulation and...
